China, Republic, Beiyang Government Merit Medal, 2nd cl., Officer, maker marked, 1912 - 1949. In original CCG holder, with certification.

In silver, enamels. Without removing it from its case, we can only approximately measure its size, 59 mm in height (incl. green leaves), 50 mm in width. The certification tag cites its weight as 39.4 g. The hieroglyphics on top of the center medallion read "Republic of China" (another translation we had was "Nation of Central China"). The plum blossoms connecting the five rays symbolize strength in Chinese iconography. The inscription on the tag reads "Blue Medal of the Republic of China." The maker's mark is struck into the reverse near the center, meaning "Manufactu

As far as we can tell without removing the medal from the case, it is in very fine to excellent condition, showing just minute cracks to the white and blue enamels at the lower prong of the 3 o'clock arm. We captured them on camera as well as we could through the plastic of the case.

The Beiyang Government Merit Medal was instituted in 1912. It was awarded for distinguished service during the period when the Beiyang government was the officially recognized government of China.
