The Brest Fortress was unique in its receiving the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for its unique and well-researched and publicized defense against the Nazi invaders from the first moments of the Patriotic War on 22 June 1941, lasting until 23 July, completely isolated from the retreating Red Army. The 9,000-strong garrison of the fortress offered such incredible resistance that Hitler and Mussolini paid it a visit to it in late August and, reportedly, Hitler took a piece of one of the bridges leading to the fortress with him as a memento. The last recorded skirmish took place on 23 July. Five Red Army soldiers were killed, one senior lieutenant was captured. The following search for more Red Army troops ended with wounding one more soldier. He was the last defender of the fortress.
