Small Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Paraskeva of Iconium, circa XIX-early XX C.

In bronze & enamels, 2 ¼" x 2". The icon depicts Saint Paraskeva, aka Paraskeva Friday. In Russian Orthodox tradition, Paraskeva is considered a virgin martyr who was born to a rich family of Iconium (modern-day Konya in Turkey). Her parents were Christian and gave her the name Paraskeva which in Greek means Friday, the day she was baptized. According to tradition, Paraskeva converted a man named Antoninus to Christianity. She was subsequently martyred at Iconium during the persecutions of Diocletian, the Roman emperor of the late 3rd - early 4th century. Among the Russian Ortho

Among the Russian Orthodox peasantry, she was venerated as protector of women, marriage, homestead, and farm animals.

In very good to excellent condition. Mild wear to the highest points of the artwork but most of the details are nicely defined; the enamels are well preserved and show minor flaking, not too obvious. An occasional tiny ding can be noticed at magnification, but hardly without it.
