
Excellent Railroad Signalman badge, circa early to mid-1950s.
Brass, enamels; measures 39.3 mm in height, 26.5 mm in width; weighs 11.1 g without the screw plate. This post-war variation features a relatively flat central oval portion of the badge and glit finish. The screw post is approx. 3.0 mm in diameter.
In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel fully retains its beautiful luster. A careful examination with a 10x loupe and UV light reveals a single tiny chip in the upper left corner of the banner, expertly repaired and nearly unnoticeable without magnification. Elsewhere, the enamel is essentially pristine, having only a couple of microscopic contact marks.
The raised details of the artwork show almost no wear; the original gilt finish is clearly visible in recessed areas of the wreath and on the reverse. The screw post is of full length, well over 12 mm, and includes an original post-1945 screw plate marked "ShM Z-D MPS."
This badge is by far the hardest to find of the Railway Proficiency Series of 1943-57.
