The planned destination of this flight was the city of Khabarovsk, but it was unreachable due to weather conditions. After flying over the Sea of Okhotsk at the altitude of 150-300 feet, the terrible visibility forced Chkalov to land on a sand beach of the Udd Island. A local resident took them in for the night. To take off for the return flight, the border guards stationed on the island had to construct a 1,500-ft.-long wooden runway. Of the 9,374 km of the actual flown distance, only 6,000 km were accepted as per the rules of the International Aviation Federation, the length of the straight line from start to finish.
