The size is continental 6" x 4", published by The Soviet Artist Publishing House, circulation unknown. The artist's name, A. Melnar, is printed in the lower left-hand corner on the verso. The artwork is an offset print of Melnar's oil-on-canvas painting.

Latvian riflemen were units formed in 1915 from residents of the Baltic provinces of the Russian Empire, and in 1916 were designated as the Latvian Rifle Division. After the October Revolution, they joined the Bolsheviks and became the largest ethnic military formation in the Red Army. Most of them did not

After the October Revolution, they joined the Bolsheviks and became the largest ethnic military formation in the Red Army. Most of them did not join the communist party and served the young Soviet republic as a mercenary force, specializing in punitive operations against civilian population. Some of them made an impressive career in Feliks Dzerzhinsky's Cheka.
