The Brīvais Vilnis collective of fishermen was founded in 1947 under the Ministry of Fishing Industry of Latvian SSR and operated out of the coastal town of Salacgrīva in northern Latvia. Over the years the collective farm had grown to include canning facilities and refrigerated trawlers, and became a major employer in the area.
