Original Ink Pen Drawing by N. Chebotayev, made for the 23 February 1939 Red Army Day issue of the Krasnoyarskiy Komsomolets newspaper. VG condition.
Measures 7 ¾" x 10". The artist's hand signature is in the lower right-hand corner of the artwork as well as on the verso. The handwritten text on the verso is an excerpt from the contemporary version of the Red Army military oath. The stamp on the verso approves the drawing to be ready on 22 February for the Red Army Day issue of the newspaper the next day. In very good condition. A few creases to the paper near the bottom show on the obverse as hairlines, not many and not very intrusive to the eye. Two small tears to the right edge have been repaired with acid-free tape on the verso. There is a small area at the top right-hand corner where the surface layer of the paper has been stripped - mechanically or chemically. Mild soiling throughout is to be expected on an original work of art. Note that the uneven edge on the right, and a small area of the same at the bottom were made intentionally, presumably for using this drawing in a collage. Overall, the drawing presents very well.
The drawing was made for an issue of the Krasnoyarskiy Komsomolets newspaper, a publication intended for young adult readership, members of the Lenin Young Communist League, aka Komsomol. Krasnoyarsk, a large city on the banks of the Yenisei River, is the administrative center of the Krasnoyarsk Krai, an enormous region occupying 913,800 sq. miles of territory in Siberia along the Yenisei River. In 1939, it was "populated" with hundreds of thousands of GULAG prisoners who were there to mine its natural resources and develop its industry. That was, after they had built their own prison camps.
