3. Internal Passport Photo ID, 22 December 1938.
Oilcloth-bound booklet measuring approx. 3 ½" x 5", issued on 22 December 1938 in the city of Grozny, valid for five years. Soviet internal state photo IDs were called "passport" but did not work for foreign travel. Instead, they were instruments of state control over their owners. In this case, the ID photo and personal information are followed by a stamp registering Tsyptsyn's membership in the Communist Party. The largest number of pages were for ПРОПИСКА ("propiska", or mandatory registration of place of residence). Without a current stamp with an address, a Soviet citizen was considered a "vagabond." If caught without current propiska a third time, the person could be imprisoned for up to two years. The front cover shows an early design with the USSR State Emblem with six scrolls and the word "PASSPORT" in as many languages.
In excellent condition. The wear to the cover is minimal, mostly just mild scuffing along the spine and a crease to the upper right-hand corner. The internal pages are clean and wrinkle-free; all the printed and handwritten text is vibrant and perfectly legible. The ID photo is in excellent condition.
