Certificate of Graduation from Foreign Language Courses, issued on 21 June 1941 to Elena Sandalidi.

Single page 8" x 11 ½", front and back, issued - just one day before Germany invaded the USSR - by the INO foreign language courses at the People's Commissariat of Education of Adjarian ASSR. The document certifies that Elena Sandalidi had completed a high school level course of the German language with excellent marks, and is qualified to work as a translator. The certificate is hand-signed by the director of the courses, chairman of the examination commission, and secretary, and bears the seal of the organization. The certificate is duplicated in Adjarian language on the verso.

In fair to good condition. The document has been stored folded in eight for a long time. The fold lines show partial separations. The edges show moderate fraying and multiple short rips. However, most of the wear is confined to the margins. All the printed and handwritten text, seal and signatures are crisp, clear, and perfectly legible.

It is noteworthy that throughout the Soviet era high school students could barely string up a coherent sentence in the foreign language they had studied and completed a full course of. The fact that a person was qualified as a translator or interpreter after finishing a high school level course shows that the Soviet powers-that-be knew full-well that war was coming and were feverishly, albeit inadequately, preparing for it.
