Badge for the Lower Ranks Who Had Served in His Majesty's Own Companies or Squadrons During the Reign of Alexander III, mid-1890s.

In silver-plated brass; measures 58.2 x 42.5 mm; weighs 19.5 g without the wing nut and washer; overall weight with the wing nut and washer is 28.7 g. The cipher of Alexander III is a separate superimposed part soldered to the wreath. Albeit the badge is of relatively simple construction appropriate for the lower ranks, its artwork is beautifully detailed.

In outstanding, excellent condition, especially for a badge of late XIX C. vintage. The raised details of the cypher, crown, and wreath are absolutely pristine, free of any detectable wear. A good amount of the original

In outstanding, excellent condition, especially for a badge of late XIX C. vintage. The raised details of the cypher, crown, and wreath are absolutely pristine, free of any detectable wear. A good amount of the original silver finish is clearly visible throughout, especially in recessed areas in the lower portion on the obverse and on the reverse. The screw post is approx. 21 mm long, has not been reduced. The badge comes with the period wing nut and washer that are clearly original to it, judging by their wear and age precisely matching that of the badge itself. Overall, a superb example - in our opinion, impossible to upgrade.

The badge was one of several established in 1894 upon Nicholas II's succession to the throne and issued as a special distinction to those who had served in one of the elite "His Majesty's Own" units during the reign of the previous emperor. Sharing the overall design, the badges differed by their quality, materials and color scheme depending on the rank of the recipient. Most if not all of these were likely manufactured within a year or two of the institution of the badge.
