Pilotka Side Cap, dated 1941.
The outer is in napped olive-green sukno wool of distinct early-WW2 type: very tightly woven with just a slight nap. The underside is in baika, a soft wool flannel fabric; the liner is in gray cotton. The sweat band in thin rubberized canvas is also of a characteristically early kind. Comes with an appropriate M-1941 field hat badge in steel painted green.

The cap is in very good condition, which is truly outstanding for a piece of Red Army headgear of such an early WW2 vintage. The wool exterior is generally well-preserved, having just a few very tiny moth nips and tracks, all of them nearly unnoticeable; there are no significant holes.
Both the interior and exterior are very clean, free of the usual sweat stains or significant soiling. The sweat band is not overly dry and although it shows a fair amount of wear, remains intact and sound.
Although side caps of this type were worn by all ranks of the Red Army, the quality of this specimen suggests that it was made for a
commissioned officer. Very few of these survived from the first year of the Patriotic War after the onslaught of the German Barbarossa
offensive. Any Soviet field uniforms from that period are hard to find, but an original 1941-dated side cap made of wool in as good a
condition as the example offered here is a truly rare find.
