Photo of Major Evdokiya Bershanskaya (Евдокия Давыдовна Бершанская), Commander of the 46th Taman Guards All-Female Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, aka The Night Witches, 1943-45.

Measures 4 ½" x 3 ½", printed on thin glossy photo paper. The photo depicts Bershanskaya in the cockpit of her U-2 biplane.

In very good to excellent condition, showing the typical light warping and minimal corner bumps. Tilting the photo to reflect a bright light reveals horizontal hairlines but they are virtually invisible when looking at it at a normal viewing angle. The photo was a little overexposed but is in very sharp focus, providing a good opportunity to view the smallest details. The verso is clean, shows a handwritten inscription in lead pencil with Bershanskaya's

Graduate of the famous Bataysk Pilots School, Bershanskaya worked there as a flight instructor from 1932 to 1939. At the beginning of the Patriotic War, at the age of 28, she assumed command of an all-female bomber aviation regiment. The Germans gave them the moniker "Night Witches". They flew light, small, and slow U-2 biplanes that could fly at low altitudes and at low speed, stealthily, very hard to detect from the ground. The nighttime attacks of the Night Witches were sudden, well-planned and well-executed. Bershankaya flew only 28 missions over the course of the war. Her main achievement was her talent and tireless work as commander and organizer. She remains the only woman in the Soviet Armed Forces who was awarded with the Order of Suvorov.
