This scarce piece is the earliest known version of the Leningrad Arctic "Seafaring" School graduation badges. More commonly referred to by the abbreviation "LAU" (ЛАУ in Russian), this merchant fleet college opened its doors in the summer of 1945, immediately after the end of the Patriotic War. This unique college was specifically tasked with preparing specialists for the Soviet polar stations as well as crews of icebreakers and other ships designed to operate in high latitudes. Although technically a civilian school, it also provided naval training; its graduates received the rank of junior lieutenant of the naval reserves. The school closed in 1991, just before the breakup of the Soviet Union.
