The centerpiece of the front cover is the embossed title of the book and a bas-relief of the icebreaker Sedov adrift in a field of polar ice. Published by GLAVSEVMORPUT, the organization in charge of all Soviet civilian navigation in the northern seas. The book is a condensed account of the expedition undertaken by fifteen Soviet seamen and scientists who were rescued near Greenland by the Soviet icebreaker I. Stalin after 812 days adrift in polar ice while the scientists on board conducted their measurements and experiments. The book is lavishly illustrated with b/w photos taken of and from the ship as well as some aerial photos; photo portraits of each participant next to their short bio, schematic diagrams and tables with some results of their scientific measurements, and a foldout map at the end of the book highlighting the entire path of the drift. And, it being a 1940 publication, an abundance of quoted telegrams from Stalin and Molotov to the ship emphasizing that no task is too difficult for the Soviet people, and in the opposite direction, from the captain to Stalin and Molotov with all the appropriate genuflecting and rapture on account of the great leadership of the Communist Party, the Soviet government and, personally, the great Soviet leader Comrade Stalin. Inserts with b/w portraits of Stalin and Molotov precede the narration, and even the title page.

As far as photo portraits of the participants of the expedition, we included two most important: the captain, Konstantin Badigin, and the ship's cook, Pavel Meger.

In excellent condition. The corners of the covers show minimal wear to the leatherette. There is an interesting "thing" in the middle of the spine: at first glance, it looks like cracked and chipped-off leatherette, but look at it a second time, and you see the silhouette of a ship amidst large and small ice floes. The internal pages are very mildly and evenly age-toned, otherwise completely clean and unmarked. All the text and photos are crisp and clear, especially the full-page photos reprinted from the originals.

Please note that the pen in our photo is for size reference.
