Comes with the original 2-ft. long neck ribbon with dual hook and eye at the ends. The reverse of the crown suspension has a stamped inscription, perhaps a serial number. The medallion is in very fine condition. The red enamel is missing at 7 o'clock on one of the alternating red and green petals around the center medallion, and another tiny piece of it on the petal at 5:30 o'clock. The royal cipher on the reverse centerpiece has a shallow flake to the red enamel, and a tiny chip showing the silver underneath. The multi-colored palette of the medallion masks the wear well, making it not very obvious or intrusive to the eye. The neck ribbon is in very fine condition as well, showing a few whitish streaks on the red silk, often encountered in ribbons for this order, otherwise very clean.
The issue box is made of wood, covered in orange short-pile velvet on the outside. The fitted pad for the medallion is finished in off- white velvet while the inside of the lid is lined with padded white moiré silk. The pad is removable, with ample space under it for the ribbon. The lid of the box is decorated with the Garuda, the national emblem of Thailand, in silver gilt. The box is in fine condition, showing considerable wear to the orange velvet but structurally sound. The Garuda emblem has retained all its gilt except for the high points where it has worn off showing the silver underneath.
The Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant was established in 1861 by King Rama IV of the Kingdom of Siam. It is awarded to government
officials for five years of distinguished service, thus making it Thailand's most-commonly awarded order. Type 3 was instituted in 1941 and is
currently constituted.
