We looked up Nikolai Firsov in the catalog Heroes of the Soviet Union and found that, then in the rank of senior lieutenant, he received Hero of the Soviet Union for his actions as Tank Company Commander with the 198th Tank Regiment, 6th Guards Cavalry Division, 3rd Guards Cavalry Corps, 3rd Belorussian Front. On 25 June 1944, while fighting on approaches to the village of Guta, Poland, his tank destroyed three heavy German tanks. On 28 July Firsov captured a German tank and used it to circle behind the enemy lines and kill dozens of German troops. His success allowed his company to break through enemy resistance and advance. At the time this citation was issued, Lt. Col. Firsov commanded Order of the Red Banner 44th Training Tank Division stationed in Yelansk, Ural Military District.
