The "unified" Military Academy badge was introduced in 1957 replacing the academy specific badges identified by the name on the plaque. The badges were made in real silver through the end of the 50s until the cheaper Neusilber ("German silver") version appeared circa 1960. Almost needless to say, the silver version is far less common than the later issues in Neusilber.
