Photo ID to Lieutenant Colonel Lev Rastegayev to fulfill the duties of an Auto Transport Inspector with the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.

Measures 3 ¼" x 4 ¾" when closed. The ID bears the seal of the Commander of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and shows the printed name of Marshal of the Soviet Union Andrey Grechko who held this post at the time. However, the hand signature is NOT Grechko's. The ID is not dated but it is known that Grechko held this post from 1953 to 1957 but - note the word "occupational", still present on the front cover but blacked out inside - it was removed from the title of the group in 1954. Grechko's role in suppression of the East German uprising in 1953 served him as a nice stepping ston

His next post was First Deputy Minister of Defense of the USSR and Commander of the Land Forces of the USSR.

In good condition. The covers show a vertical crease - visible but not too intrusive to the eye. The wear to the leatherette of the cover is minimal, mostly contained to the spine. The officer's photo is clear and in sharp focus; the seals, printed and handwritten text are crisp and perfectly legible. Unfortunately, the last two pages are stuck together; the right-side page showing minor wear suggesting someone's attempts to separate the pages. However, the wear does not reach the text, seal, or the signature or a senior officer who signed for Grechko.

Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
