DOSAAF (ДОСААФ, Russian abbreviation for Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force, and Navy) was established in 1927 as OSOAVIAKhIM. In 1951 it was renamed DOSAAF. But, whatever the acronym, this huge and well-funded organization was in the business of paramilitary preparation of the young Soviet civilian population.
