The lettering around the sickle is covered with black enamel. Excellent quality, at least for a mass-produced wartime badge.

In very fine condition. The enamel shows beautiful luster and is overall well-preserved. There is only a single tiny chip in the upper right corner of one of the banners and a couple of minuscule hairlines in the same spot on the other banner; none of these flaws are glaring or very detractive. The flagpole finials are slightly bent but completely sound.

The details of the artwork are well-preserved and crisp. The fragile silver finish on the obverse is mostly worn out but traces of it are still visible in the recessed areas of the locomotive. The silver plating on the reverse, on the other hand, is largely intact, especially in the center close to the screw post. Note that the "blob" of solder around the screw post is typical of wartime production and was left there during the manufacturing process, not a more recent repair. The screw post is full length, approx. 12 mm long. The screw plate is a replacement taken from a post-war Soviet order, but it fits the thick screw post perfectly.
