Full-Size Cross appears to be in gold (unmarked and untested for gold content), and enamels with painted white phoenix on the obverse center medallion, 45.0 mm in height incl. the eyelet, 36.0 mm in width. The arms of the cross are inscribed EX FLAM CLA RIOR in gold, forming the motto of the House of Hohenlohe, EX FLAMIS CLARIOR ("from the flame, brighter"). The reverse center medallion features the monogram "PE" for Prince Phillipp Earnst I who established the order in 1757 on occasion of his 95th birthday. in excellent condition. The only wear visible to the naked eye is to the reverse: a hairline to the 3 o'clock arm and a tiny chip at the tip of the 6 o'clock arm. The ribbon is original, with colors still bright and showing just a couple of tiny catches to the silk.

The Prinzen-Size Cross. The same design and materials as the full-size cross, measures 32.1 mm in height incl. the eyelet, 25.1 mm in width. The suspension ring is hallmarked with an eagle's head. In very fine condition. The obverse shows small chips to the white enamel of the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock arms and slight wear to the gold of the "EX" and "FLAM" inscriptions. The reverse shows a chip to the enamel of the 6 o'clock arm. None of the chips are too obvious or detractive. The ribbon is somewhat faded on the obverse due to exposure to light. Its silk is partly deteriorated.

The original order, Order of the Golden Flame, was redesigned by the founder's son, Prince Karl Albrecht I, in 1770. It got the new title, the Order of the Phoenix, and acquired three classes: Commander Cross, Commander Breast Star, and Knight's Cross.
