The issue box measures 7" x 5 ½" x 2 ¾", in wood finished with indigo colored velvet on the outside and crimson velvet on the inside. The fitted spaces are not padded but the inside of the lid is padded. The latch is in dark tarnished metal. In excellent condition, showing no wear inside or out beyond a minimal amount of lint, to be expected in short-pile velvet, and not too intrusive to the eye.

The Order of Merit is awarded by the President of South Korea for outstanding services in politics, economy, education, arts, or science leading to improvement of the citizen's welfare and advancement of national development. Somewhat uncommonly, the medals of the five classes of this order are named differently: Mugunghwa (Hibiscus) - 1st cl., Moran (Peony) - 2nd cl., Dongbaek (Camellia) - 3rd cl., Mongnyeon (Magnolia) - 4th cl., and Seongnyu (Pomegranate) - 5th cl.
