Honorary Certificate to a 4th grade student Vasiliy Gorbokon for excellent grades and exemplary behavior, 4 June 1952.

Single sheet 12 ½" x 9", front only. The certificate features b/w portraits of Lenin and Stalin on both sides of the state emblem of the Ukrainian SSR. Neatly filled in with a quill pen, it says that it was awarded to Vasiliy Ivanovich Golbokon, a fourth-grader in a rural Ukrainian school, for outstanding year-end results and exemplary behavior. The certificate bears the school's seal and is hand-signed by the principal, assistant principal and three teachers.

In fair to good condition. The document shows several rips and creases, mostly contained to the margins. Some of the wear

In fair to good condition. The document shows several rips and creases, mostly contained to the margins. Some of the wear has been repaired on the verso, and more repair and reinforcement can be easily done with library tape, if desired. The colors of the graphics are vibrant, the printed and handwritten text is bright and crisp.

It was indeed common practice to reward and encourage academic performance with these certificates of achievement in the 1950s-60s, perhaps even later, and especially among elementary school students who were young and naïve enough to take them seriously. In this case, it is uncommon that the full name of the student was used, including his patronymic. No doubt a welcome sign of respect for the boy.

Please note that the pen in our photo is for size reference.
