The shoulder straps are field type: soft, in olive drab wool with sky-blue piping, single red stripe and slip-on "tongues" in black ersatz leather; note that the boards are five-sided, of WW2 style (i.e. made no later than in 1946). The rank stars and Air Force insignia are in silvered brass.
The size of the tunic is small as would be appropriate for a Soviet combat aviator of the time, able to fit into a tiny cockpit of a frontline aircraft. Chest measures about 18 " with 22 " sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff, 26.5 " from top of the collar in the back to the bottom of the tunic.
Good condition. There are a number of small threadbare spots and scuffs, the largest of them less than an inch in length on the font between the third and fourth buttons from the top; all the rest are far less noticeable and none of them too detractive. There are some small moth bites and tracks to the outer layer of the gabardine fabric but no penetrating holes. The sky-blue piping of the tunic is perfect throughout; the shoulder straps are likewise completely intact. The exterior of the tunic is very clean while the liner shows a moderate amount of soling near the bottom. The liner has a modest amount of wear along the neck but remains completely sound and free of tears.
Overall, a nice wartime example of Soviet M-43 military aviator's tunic that was likely worn in combat but remains free of significant damage. Original unaltered examples such as this one have never been common and are becoming increasingly hard to find. Please note that it has been treated in our freezer to prevent any possibility of an active moth problem.
Please note: the leather belt is not included with the kitel but may be available separately in our
