Badge of Distinction of the Military Order of St George, 4th class, #57879, awarded for the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

In silver; measures 40.8 mm in height including the eyelet, 34.5 mm in width; weighs 10.4. The serial number is stamped in the standard font of the period. The U-shaped eyelet is also characteristic of the Russo-Turkish War issues. Although no information on the recipient of this cross has yet been found in the archives, its serial number leaves no doubt that it is indeed an award for the Russo-Turkish War.

In excellent condition, extremely rare for a cross of the Russo - Turkish War period. Both sides have only a few minuscule dings and are free of significant wear of any kind. The borders of both the center medallion and arms are intact; there are no edge knocks or bumps. On the obverse, the center medallion is nearly pristine, its artwork perfect and exceptionally crisp. The cypher on the reverse shows just a very minor amount of wear to the high points but its details are overall very well-preserved. There is a somewhat irregular patina to the reverse that adds interest and character. Note that there is a small "dot"-shaped protrusion on the cypher side of the center medallion located between the right ends of the stylized letter "C". This is almost certainly an imperfection that occurred during the manufacturing process at the mint - we have seen other mint flaws of this nature on medals and crosses of the period - and not a result of wear.

With ongoing research of the Russian archives, it may be just a matter of time before information about the recipient of this award may be found. This piece is not only beautifully preserved, but also has a tremendous research potential.
