Podstakannik "Peace to the World", in Melchior, by Kolchugino Factory, circa 1970s.

Stands 103 mm tall to the tip of the handle, 71 mm across the body, 85 mm wide at the bottom of the skirt. The artwork shows a rather uncommon centerpiece with the biblical dove flying over the globe resting on the proverbial olive branch, and a banner with the inscription "Миру - Мир!" ("peace to the world"). The rest of the body is richly decorated with a grapevine ornament. Of note is the "colonnade" supporting the floral ornament. The spaces between the "columns" are a beautiful design feature which allows a see-through view of the amber tea

The bottom rim features the maker's logo graphic of a wood grouse, the trademark of the Kolchugino Factory. The letters "МНЦ" stand for "Медь, Никель, Цинк" (copper, nickel, zinc), the components of Melchior. This mark means that there is no lead in the alloy and it is safe for contact with food products. To the right of the maker mark is the price of 2 rubles 60 kopeks, rather hefty for just one podstakannik, but justified by its high quality and expected longevity.

In very good condition. The skirt shows several shallow bumps whereas the body appears to be free of any deformities. Even, light, and very attractive patina highlights the relief of the artwork.

Please note: If you try to come up with a replacement glass liner, it should be made of tempered glass even though we urge you not to use this to drink from! We offer this strictly as a historic artifact (and dramatic stage prop for your dining room or study). We provide no warranty of its suitability for actually drinking hot beverages like tea or coffee. All we know is that it should look great sitting on a tray next to your antique family samovar.
