Soldier's Letter from the Front to Relatives in the Kursk Region, dated 3 September 1944.

The envelope measures approx. 4" x 3". The envelope is made of a sheet cut out of a Polish bookkeeping ledger, judging by the printed Polish word "przeniesienia" ("transfer"), seen on the page of the letter which is written on another sheet cut out from the ledger. The postal cancellation stamps on the envelope tell us that it took the letter only eleven days to reach its destination, a small village in the Kursk Region about 50 km from Kursk and far from the nearest railroad! Rather impressive for wartime mail service and counting in the delay at the military censor, whose stamp is on

In very good to excellent condition. The paper of the cover is mildly soiled, the letter shows just a couple of tiny stains in a blank spot, not affecting the text. It appears that the censor did not bother unsealing the letter, and just cut off one side of the cover with scissors.

The content of the letter is just family gossip, written by a barely literate person. It was quite common then for a child to finish just four years of elementary school, especially in rural areas.

Please note that the penny in our photo is for size reference.
