Head Bust of Stalin in gypsum with brown paint coating and gold highlights, on marble plinth, circa mid-1940s - early 50s.
Enormous, about twice the life-size head in gypsum, standing on a plinth of gray marble. The total weight is a little over 35 lbs. The sculpture stands nearly 22" tall including the plinth, 19" tall without. The plinth size is 6 ¼" wide x 7" deep x 3" high.
The sculpture is finished in brown paint with gold highlights on high points. The artwork is unmarked but since Stalin is depicted wearing his Marshal of the Soviet Union star (he was made MSU in 1943), we date the item as made in mid-1940s to early 1950s. Use of gypsum and paint suggests the likelihood of this being a wartime

Use of gypsum and paint suggests the likelihood of this being a wartime item when the austerity measures made using bronze for a sculpture unthinkable, even for a bust of Stalin.
In good condition. Part of the back of the left ear has chipped off and is missing, the paint coating has flaked off in several places, and we would like to advise that the sculpture should be manhandled with great care to prevent further flaking of the paint. Overall, the bust presents very well, the wear looking minimal against the huge size of the item.
