In excellent condition. The image is pristine, the margin around it shows barely noticeable storage wear but no significant wrinkles or soiling.

Admiral Mikhail Lazarev (Михаил Петрович Лазарев, 1788 - 1851) was a Russian fleet commander and explorer, with the highest achievements in both of these capacities. As an explorer, he circumnavigated the globe three times resulting in discoveries ranging in importance from Atoll Suvorov (aka Suwarrow), a tiny island in the south Pacific, to Antarctic mainland and numerous islands. He also conducted broad research in the fields of meteorology and ethnography.

As a naval commander, he showed outstanding qualities and results in the Russo-Turkish War and signed the Treaty of Hunkar Iskelesi with the Ottoman Empire which brought about an alliance between the two powers. Following that, Lazarev was appointed Commander of the Black Sea Fleet, the Black Sea ports, and military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolaev, putting him in charge of the naval bases there and guarding access to the Black Sea for the Russian Empire.

Lazarev is buried with his disciples Nakhimov, Kornilov and Istomin in the Admirals' Burial Vault in Sevastopol. His name lives on in the name of an atoll and two capes in the Pacific, a former island in the now-dry Aral Sea, a port in the Sea of Japan, a bay and sea in the South Ocean, several settlements in the former Soviet Union. And if that is not enough, a minor planet, discovered by a Soviet astronomer in 1978, also bears Lazarev's name!
