Standing Portrait of WW2 Soviet NCO, in pencil, circa mid- to late 1940s.

Large format, measuring 16.5" x 23.5", in pencil on vellum paper. The drawing presents a WW2 Soviet NCO wearing an M-43 uniform (sr. sergeant, if the artist was precise in imaging the shoulder boards), standing still, holding his Mosin-Nagant rifle with one hand, reading a letter, most likely from home. The drawing is unsigned, but it is clearly seen that the unknown artist was a talented professional, who managed to capture and relay to the viewer a moment in a soldier's life that all of them cherished perhaps above everything else. The soldier's posture is completely still. His body is straight, not remembering to relax, his right leg is "forgotten" slightly behind. The soldier is wholly immersed in the letter, unaware of his body or everything else around him. This is truly a fine work of art, powerful in its subtlety.

In excellent condition. As almost all original artwork in pencil, it shows "the artist at work", i.e., fingerprints and smears of graphite at the edges, as well as traces of graphite transferred from other drawings held together in a sketchpad or folio. This is exactly what adds to the air of authenticity of the drawing. This, and the tiny pushpin holes at the corners, left from when the sheet was pinned to an easel or a drawing board.

This drawing can be easily framed, and will add a wonderful personal touch to a collection of WW2 personal effects and trench art.
