Excellent Tanker badge, circa 1942-44 issue.

Brass, enamels; measures 44.4 mm tall x 37.8 mm wide. This is an early type of the Tanker's badge, featuring characteristically crude wreath and domed center medallion. Note also the "streamlined" construction of the cannon and especially the stylized tank turret. The top ornament is formed by five scrolls with a border defining the upper edge.

Note also the "streamlined" construction of the cannon and especially the stylized tank turret. The top ornament is formed by five scrolls with a border defining the upper edge. This version is listed as NKPS in the Airapetyan's catalog (although it is now believed to have been also manufactured by a couple of other makers including the Shcherbinsky Stamping Factory.)

In outstanding, excellent condition, extremely uncommon for a "Combat Proficiency" award of WW2 era. The enamel is extremely well preserved showing very nice luster; there is just a minimal amount of rubbing on the center medallion and some microscopic contract marks invisible to the naked eye. The enamel is completely free of usual scratches, chips or flaking.

The wreath and details of the tank are likewise beautifully preserved and crisp, with the original gilt finish intact and bright. The fragile grey finish on the edge of the shield and on the scrolls is also intact. The screw post is full length, approx. 12 mm, and includes an original WW2-era NKPS screw plate which fits the screw perfectly. Overall, this piece is a truly superb example of a WW2 Soviet Tanker's badge - nearly impossible to upgrade condition-wise.
