Tvorchestvo ("Creativity"), issue # 5, 1937, of the monthly journal of the Unions of Soviet Painters and Sculptors.

Large format, measures 13 ¾" x 10 ¼", 24 pp. Circulation only 7,000 copies. Very unusual design features! Internal pages of heavy-stock matte coated paper are within a cover of thick pulp paper; the graphic on the cover is a color plate glued on to it by a thin line of glue along the top edge; and finally, the contents are listed on the outside page of the back cover. There is a large number of illustrations, all b/w.

In good condition. The cover has acquired a bit of discoloration along the right and left edges due to prolonged exposure to light as well as very minor corner bumps

In good condition. The cover has acquired a bit of discoloration along the right and left edges due to prolonged exposure to light as well as very minor corner bumps but no separations at the fold. The cover shows a few minor faded stains. Binding is provided by two staples and is very tight even though the staples are somewhat rusty. The color plate with the portrait of a Soviet sculptor is holding reasonably well considering that almost half of it is separated from the glue (obviously, something that can be repaired easily and quickly) and shows evidence of a long-since-flattened-out crease at the bottom right corner. Ditto the bottom corners of the cover. The internal pages are well preserved, showing only slight curling or creasing at the top corner and very light age toning. The first few pages suggest an issue with overabundance of printing ink used, so that it left light imprints on the opposite page. Not very obvious and definitely not detractive.

This issue opens with very interesting models of a monument to N. Gogol offered by various sculptors competing for this commission. It also covers the paintings of several Russian and Soviet artists including those of the Belorussian painter of Jewish ethnicity Yuliy Pen who had been murdered earlier that year.

Please note that the pen in our photo is for size reference.
