Award Document for a Defense of Caucasus Medal, issued on 17 August 1945 to Seaman Vasiliy Kopin (Василийй Семенович Копин).

Measures approx. 5½" x 8¼". Shows a stamp of the 73rd Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment and hand-signed by its commander, Lieut. Colonel Sologub.

The hand-written entries and stamp are perfectly clear and completely legible.

Note the date of issue: three days after Japan's acceptance of the surrender terms on Aug. 14th and three weeks before the official end of WW2. Even though Japanese Emperor Hirohito made a broadcast announcement to his troops in Manchuria on August 15th, his speech came short of a direct acceptance of defeat or order to lay down arms. Therefore, the fighting in the Far East and Soviet advance into China and Korea continued for several more days.

It is not clear where the 73rd Antiaircraft Regiment was stationed in August 1945. In the early part of the war however, it was involved in the defensive battles in Crimea and Caucasus, protected the Tuapse naval base, and took part in the liberation of Crimea as a part of the Separate Coastal Army. In all likelihood, Seaman Kopin was already serving in this unit in 1942-43 when he earned his Defense of Caucasus Medal.
