In very fine to excellent condition, far better than the average. The enamel is very well-preserved overall. The red enamel in particular shows beautiful luster, has only some tiny contact marks that are practically invisible to the naked eye, and is completely free of significant flaking or other noticeable wear. The white enamel in the band has a couple of minuscule flakes and light surface rubbing.

The details of the wreath and mortar are exceptionally well-preserve and crisp, nearly pristine. The original gilt finish is almost entirely intact, and so is the grey finish on the edge of the shield - an uncommon case. The silver finish on the reverse is also nearly perfect. The screw post is full length, well over 13.5 mm long, and includes original screw plate of WW2 model maker-marked "ShMZ-NKPS".

The Excellent Mortarman badge was established in May 1942, one of the initial seven badges that started the "Proficiency" series.
