The artwork is very reminiscent of the much earlier, 1940s-50s era - possibly indicative of the early 1980's change of political winds in Kremlin and the ongoing tilt towards the ideologically rigid and bellicose past.

The model for this 1982 medal was created by A.A. Korolyuk. Originally, only 600 pieces were struck at the Moscow Mint, but the medal was apparently in such a high demand that an additional 2500 pc were minted in 1991. Both issues were apparently identical, so the specimen offered here may be from either 1982 or 1991.

The exact purpose of this medal is unknown, but in all likelihood, it was intended for high-ranking Soviet and foreign officials visiting the exhibition - much along the same lines as the badges issued to "VIP" visitors of Soviet showcase military units or space program landmarks.
