Order of St Anne, Civil Division, 1st class Breast Star, Civil Division, by Keibel, circa 1880s-early 1900s.

Silver gilt, enamels; measures 87.4 mm in height, 88.3 mm in width; weighs 53.5 g. The pin on the reverse has been replaced at some point, most likely with a screw post as was customary to make the star more reliably attached while worn on a tunic. More recently, the decoration was restored to its original appearance with a new pin added. The star is therefore missing its hallmarks that could be found on the underside of the pin and reverse of the center medallion (the flat base of the latter was replaced during the original conversion.) Nevertheless, the star is clear

The star is therefore missing its hallmarks that could be found on the underside of the pin and reverse of the center medallion (the flat base of the latter was replaced during the original conversion.) Nevertheless, the star is clearly a Kapitul piece: it bears all the characteristic traits of Albert Keibel or Julius Keibel manufacture which allow us to confidently date it to between 1880s and 1908.

The obverse of the star is excellent condition. The enamel is perfectly preserved and shows magnificent luster. There are only a few microscopic contact marks, but both the red cross and band are without the usual chips, flaking, scuffs or other noticeable wear. The rays, details of the motto, and ornamental beading are likewise beautifully preserved and crisp, free of dings or hairline fractures. The gilt on the reverse of the rays appears to be original. Due to the alteration on the reverse, we would rate the overall condition as fine. It is nevertheless a very impressive piece which will display beautifully.
