30th Anniversary of the 79th Kishinevskiy / Lower Dniester Border Guard Unit (aka Military Unit #2134), commemorative badge, 1974.

Aluminum, paint; 53.3 mm tall x 30.4 mm wide. This uncommonly large and ornate badge features a border marker with the KGB emblem of shield and sword. The writing along the edge is "Order of the Red Banner Border Guard Unit, 1944-1974". Curiously, the inscription does not identify the unit, possibly due to the typical Soviet obsession with secrecy. In excellent condition.

The unit was created in the wake of the German retreat from the southwestern parts of the USSR during WW2. Initially, it was protecting the rear of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. Later, it was stationed near the Mold

The unit was created in the wake of the German retreat from the southwestern parts of the USSR during WW2. Initially, it was protecting the rear of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. Later, it was stationed near the Moldavian capital city of Kishinev, the capital of Moldavia, where it became a part of the Western Border Guard District and was responsible for guarding the Romanian border.
