Soviet Team Member Badge, 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

Gilded brass, enamel; the rectangular base measures 25.0 x 37.9 mm, over 4.5 mm thick overall not including the pin. Riveted three-piece construction: the hammer and sickle emblem and the star are separate, superimposed parts. Raised circular logo of the Moscow Mint on the reverse. This exceptionally massive piece was clearly made to impress foreign public at the Olympics. A very careful observer will notice however that at close inspection, this badge is not quite on par with the previous Olympic team member badges. It is just a notch thinner, with somewhat lower enamel quality and the star is attached by wire rather than rivet. A very slight, barely perceptible decline in quality to be sure, but perhaps this is a proverbial canary in the coal mine (the USSR basically ran out of money and collapsed three years later.)

In excellent condition. The enamel and gilt finish are perfect. The wire holding the star is slightly loose and as the result, the star rotates around its vertical axis; it will however stay in place if left undisturbed and is in no danger of coming off of the badge.
