M 1972 Air Force major general field uniform, 1970s.
Includes Kitel tunic and straight leg trousers.

A very distinctive single-breasted tunic in olive green wool gabardine with closed collar, olive drab plastic buttons, subdued embroidery on lapels, sky blue Air Force piping on the collar and cuffs. The buttons are dated "69" on the back. This is an interesting detail: plastic buttons with Soviet state seal could only go with this specific type of uniform which was introduced by a Defense Ministry decree in 1972. This means that the details such as buttons had been prepared long in advance to make a quick transition possible after the change in regulations.

Olive green shoulder boards are piped in sky blue and have embroidered olive drab stars. There is no identifying factory tag in the usual location in the inside pocket; the quality of the uniform and features such as stiffener material in the collar and cuffs allows to assume that it was custom tailored, not mass produced. The trousers are in matching material, with broad sky blue stripes. The combination of straight leg pants (rather than breeches to fit into tall boots) with combat jacket is unusual but was apparently allowed for Air Force generals.

Medium / large size, about a US size 40 with a 24" sleeve. About a 38" waist on the trousers and about a 28" inseam and 40" length..

Both the tunic and pants are in excellent condition. The tunic has a few minor spots on the cuffs that may clean off, otherwise crisp and clean. There is minimal amount of soiling to the liner under the collar but the liner is sound and fresh overall.

Introduced in 1972, uniform of this type was in use for only a short time: in 1987 the "closed collar" field tunic for Soviet generals was replaced with a more modern and practical jacket with cargo pockets. It is especially unusual to find one with Air Force piping.

Please note, the shirt, belt and other items shown in our photos are not included but may be available for purchase separately.
