The Girl With an Oar, circa 1930s, one of several statues or statuettes done on a similar theme to exhort Soviet citizens to exercise and be healthy.
Painted white metal, 30cm tall, 80mm diameter base. No marks on the base other than a letter "T" and the number or year, "1934". Slender young girl, wearing a what appears to be a swimsuit or a team uniform and a pair of slippers, leans on an oar.
Very good to excellent condition with the exception of the bronze painted finish. It was very thinly applied and has worn through to the silver colored base metal in a number of places. A good restorer could advise you on the best course to follow: remove the paint, replace it, or leave it as is.

The most famous "Girl with an Oar" sculpture was probably the huge 1930s statue by Ivan Shadr (1887-1941). It showed a very athletic but also completely naked woman athlete leaning on a very long oar. Copies of it appeared in different public parks around the Soviet Union. This variation was probably done for those who liked the idea of showing a healthy Soviet athlete but were not comfortable with the nudity of Shadr's original statue.
