Red Army Drummer, Kiev Experimental Ceramic Factory, 1962- 1976, Soviet porcelain figurine in exceptionally fine condition with both drumsticks completely undamaged and virtually 100% of the original gilding still intact.
7" x 4 1/4" x 3" (178 x 108 x 77 mm).
Excellent condition. Not only are both drumsticks present and completely intact, but they have virtually 100% of their original gilding (unusually, the drum has over 95% of its original gold trim still in place). Figurines of drummers rarely survive intact like this and the gold detailing, having been applied over the glaze, frequently has worn thin just from the light pressure of normal dusting... Even though it does not detract and is virtually unnoticeable (because we find that the viewer's attention goes almost immediate
Even though it does not detract and is virtually unnoticeable (because we find that the viewer's attention goes almost immediately to the gold drumsticks and then to drummer's face), it should be noted that there is a very slight chip on the very bottom front edge of the crescent on which he is standing.
On later versions, the factory's artists frequently "cut corners" when it came time to apply the paint; the position of the drumsticks apparently made the uniform details too difficult to "get right"!
Fortunately, this example not only has both of its golden drumsticks but it also has one of the earliest paint jobs. A truly remarkable figurine.
