Originally founded in Moscow in the late 1930s as the All- Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV) to be a year-round celebration of the achievements of the USSR, the huge, world fair-like, complex changed its name in 1956 to Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy when it was decided that its name needed to reflect the broader nature of the exhibits and competitions being held there.
Supposedly, several judged competitions were held on the
grounds virtually every week of the year and these medals
were given to the winners. The exhibition area still exists
today in all of its socialist glory although many areas are
now occupied by small retail shops.
