Medal for the Defense of Leningrad, Variation 1, 1940s issue.

Iin brass; measures 32.1 mm wide; weighs 16.5 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Late sub-variation of the Variation 1 featuring a "long" horizon.

In outstanding, excellent condition - among the best examples we've had in recent years. The medallion is completely free of any wear visible to the naked eye and has only a few microscopic contact marks that are not easy to find even under a 10x magnification. The raised details are perfect and crisp on both sides. There is a very attractive even toning to the brass throughout, while the original "gilt" mint luster is clearly visible on recessed areas, especially on the obverse.

Comes on an original WW2 era suspension, a two-layer model in brass with self-locking pin. The ribbon is old, probably of the period; although faded and moderately soiled, it adds a tremendous amount of character to the medal. Note that it is wrapped "in reverse" as is often the case with the early campaign medals. (We think that this old ribbon is much preferable to the new, but just in case the new owner prefers the latter, we've included a sufficient length of it on the side at no extra charge.) The connecting link, although cut, appears to be original or at least of the period. Overall, a truly magnificent example of the Variation 1 Leningrad Medal!
