The enterprise was founded in 1926 during the interwar period of Latvian independence and soon became the largest producer of consumer electronics in the country. It was nationalized immediately after the Soviet takeover in 1940. During WW2, its workers successfully sabotaged a Nazi attempt to evacuate all the equipment into Germany during the Soviet offensive in the Baltics. In the post-war years, the factory was a leading manufacturer of professional acoustic equipment as well as electronics for the Soviet military industry, and also continued to produce a broad array of consumer electronic products. Its sales floundered after the breakup of the USSR and the enterprise eventually went bankrupt.
