The lacquer is vibrantly shiny, the gold-plated kanji on the lid is pristine, the hinge is strong and tight, the latch is a bit loose on its hinge but in good working order.

The Order of the Sacred Treasure was founded by Emperor Meiji's edict of 1 January 1888 to be bestowed upon persons who had rendered distinguished service to the state. It was awarded to the military and civilians, and in May 1919 was extended to women.
