Portrait of a WW2 Soviet Soldier, in pencil on vellum paper, by unknown artist, possibly self-portrait, circa 1940s.

Large format, measuring 16" x 23 ½". The artwork presents a WW2 Soviet soldier at rest, sitting, his gaze contemplative, focused, immersed in his work, his posture suggesting that he may be drawing something on a sketchpad spread in his lap. Accepting this interpretation makes it very likely that this is the artist's self-portrait. Unfortunately, this piece is not signed.

The drawing is in very good to excellent condition. As almost all original drawings in pencil, it shows "the artist at work", i.e. doodles on the margins, fingerprints, etc., as well as traces of graphite transferred from other drawings stored together in a sketchpad or in a folio. This is exactly what gives it its "proof of authenticity". That, and the tiny pushpin holes at the corners, left from when the sheet was pinned to an easel or a drawing board.

This drawing can be easily framed and will be an unexpected and marvelous addition to a collection of WW2 personal effects and trench art.

Please note that the medal in our last photo is for size reference.
