Excellent Mine Layer Badge, NKPS, mid 1940s.

Excellent Mine Layer Badge, NKPS, mid 1940s.

Brass, enamels; 48.0 x 38.3 mm. This version of the elongated type by NKPS is less common than many others. It features larger flames on either side of the mine, more defined segments of the "scallop" ornament on top and straight handle of the sickle. Not shown as a separate variety in the Airapetyan's catalog.

Condition is excellent, absolutely outstanding for a badge of this vintage. The enamel has only very minor scuffs and contact marks, no flaking or other wear. The details of the artwork are pristine. The gilt and silver finish on the obverse are practically perfect although partly obscured by patina; the gray finish on the border of the shield is likewise practically untouched. The silver finish on the reverse shows no wear. The screw post is full length, well over 13 mm. Original NKPS screw plate is included (its fit is slightly loose but it still works reasonably well). This is a superb example through and through, practically impossible to upgrade.

/Similar to Figure 1 on page 98 of the "Breast Badges of the Red Army, 1941-1945" by Airapetyan/
