Sailor From Signal Service of the Southern Fleet, 1918.

Sailor From Signal Service of the Southern Fleet, 1918.

Sized 3 3/8" by 5 ". Tryuntal studio, city unknown. Well turned out sailor poses so that one can readily see his silver-handled cane (or walking stick), his pinky ring and his wrist watch. Reverse is one of the many pre-printed standard postcard formats. Short ink inscription to a girl friend named Ida dated 15 January 1918: "For good memory" from Stopa Gusev. [There is also a reference to something that seems to be the "Isle of Worms" - we have no idea what that means.] Penciled collector note in English: "WWI Russian Naval Engineer of Islands Service."

Excellent condition. Corners somewhat rounded from wear, but the image is bright and clear. Slight brightening of the image in a small area on right margin around bottom of bench, probably caused in the darkroom.

By 1918, this sailor had certainly managed to survive the First World War, but it is debatable how much longer he might be able to flaunt his stylish cane while strolling down the newly Red streets of Russia.
