The painting depicts a NKVD senior lieutenant in his field uniform. The gift inscription on the back reads "My gift to my lovely wifey Olenka, 13 October 1945 (anniversary of liberation of the city of Riga)." The three stripes on the right side of the tunic attest that this officer was wounded three times, - once lightly (red stripe), and twice severely (yellow stripes). NKVD ranks, while sharing the same names as army ranks, carry a different level of seniority. NKVD Senior Lieutenant corresponds to army or air force Major.

In excellent condition. The portrait is framed and under glass. There is no visible paint loss or any other wear or damage. The frame is reinforced by plywood triangles on the back but would probably benefit from a little restoration to hold the corners together more tightly.

The painting comes with two photos which allowed us to gain a little additional information. The officer's first name was Mikhail. His wife (the lady on both photos) was named Olga. In the gift inscription Mikhail lovingly called her Olenka. The photo with just Olga has the photo studio's stamp on the back, the words on it are in Latvian. This photo is dated 3 November 1938 and is addressed to her sister Valya (Valentina) and someone Vanya (Ivan, probably a husband or some relation to Valentina). The photo with both Olga and Mikhail is dated 14 January 1946. The inscription reads "Remember us sometimes. Olya and Misha."

Riga, the capital of Latvia, was liberated from the Nazi invaders in the course of the strategic Baltic offensive operation which lasted from 14 September until 24 November 1944. Riga was completely free of the Nazis on 15 October 1944.
